For example in the transaction entry screen where you enter the total, if I can put in 45*15.3 and it calculates the value for me automatically and puts that value in the total upon leaving the control. That will help reduce the need to switch to a calculator to figure out general math calculations and allow for speedy input. Going back into that control shows the calculation rather than the total so the user can see what they inputted. This could also work well for anyone who wants to remember the cost / unit value and not just the total.
This came up during a usability test who said the accounting tool she uses has that feature and it's very efficient and handy.
